Ships’ embroiderer sails to silk

The Shetland fishing industry has answered an appeal by Susurrus – for a silk embroiderer.

Who knew the world of marine supplies would run to professional sewing services? But happily for us, Roy Mullay, from Shetland company LHD got in touch after hearing about Susurrus on local BBC radio. And although he’d never worked with silk before, he was really keen to give it a go.

We’re delighted with the results and are pleased to now be able to offer this service to our pillowcase customers. Roy has a whole range of fonts, sizes and thread colours in his office, which overlooks the fishing boats and yachts in busy Lerwick Harbour.

For me, it also marked an unexpected connection with the past, as Roy’s office used to be the Port Control office where I had to gather the weekly shipping news and fish landings almost 30 years ago (was it really all that time ago?) as a cub reporter.

LHD has been part of the local fishing industry for over 100 years (the initials stand for Lerwick Herring Drifters) with the marine supplies arm of the company offering all manner of chandlery, fuel, wire, ropes, nets and ice – as well as embroidery.

Susurrus is really looking forward to working with Roy and to celebrate this new connection we’re offering customers the option to have a name embroidered for free. We have Roy’s practice samples here, to give you an idea of what’s available, but we will bring you pictures soon of our embroidered organic silk pillowcases.
